Energy consultancy and development of a stand-alone isle network energy supply concept for Ndanda Abbey

Currently, the electricity for the area around Ndanda Abbey (see Figure 1) in Tanzania  is provided primarily via a water turbine. During the day, the area is divided into two subnetworks, one of which is supplied by diesel generators and the other by the turbine. In addition to a carpentry workshop and other workshops of various trades, a hospital is also supplied with electricity via the company's own network, which is why the demands on the quality of supply are very high.

In recent years, there have been bottlenecks in the power supply during the dry season, and there are currently plans to connect additional power-intensive equipment in the hospital. For this reason and due to the increased costs for diesel, the power generation by the diesel generators is to be replaced by a photovoltaic system in the future. Furthermore, this should relieve the turbine or cover the expected additional power demand.

The aim of the project is on the one hand to determine the optimal dimensioning of the photovoltaic system, its optimal interconnection with the other existing power generators and a possibly necessary battery storage. Since the experience of the FfE shows that at least 10 - 20 % of the energy consumption can be saved by an energy consultation, primarily an energy consultation is carried out at the location. In the course of the inspection, the electricians on site (trained, instructors and apprentices) are also trained on the subject of efficient energy systems.

All in all, the steps are structured as follows:

  • Analysis of the available data on energy supply and demand
  • Compilation of a suitable english energy consultancy questionnaire (1)
  • Derivation of a measurement concept
  • Installation of mobile and stationary measurement devices
  • Evaluation and analysis of the measured data
  • Derivation and quantification of energy efficiency measures (1)
  • Creation of an energy concept
  • On-site training of the employees on the various steps for the creation of measurement concepts and for the maintenance of the planned plant components1
