As part of the project "CO2 Reduction Costs of Gases - Development of Static CO2 Abatement Cost Curves", the FfE investigated possibilities for greenhouse gas reduction via the usage of natural and synthetic gas in the German energy supply.
In a first step, the possibilities of replacing oil and coal with natural gas were investigated and the costs for such a transition were calculated. In a second step, the costs of switching to technologies using renewable gases were determined. The focus was on the metal production and stone processing industries. Substitution possibilities were also evaluated in the application areas of space heating and hot water as well as in low-temperature process heat.

In the project publication in the Journal for Energy Economic , the methodology and results are discussed in more detail. For the IEWT 2019, the limitations of the currently used representation of CO2 abatement cost curves were explained and from this the advantages of the visualisation developed in the project were worked out.
