Making the various consumption sectors more flexible is an important component in achieving an energy supply based on fluctuating renewable energies. Electricity-based flexibilities such as electric cars or home storage will be part of the solution, but the electrification of heat supply also has a high potential to increase the flexible demand for electricity.
Industrial heating networks are cross-sectional technologies that are used throughout Germany and are operated locally by qualified specialists. Therefore, from a purely organizational point of view, they represent a good potential for flexible load. The fact that they also represent a relevant flexibility potential in quantitative terms is derived step by step in the article.
